WHAT DO STUDENT HOSTS DO?

  • Mix with the international students, speak English and make new friends
  • Set an excellent example and follow Discovery Summer rules
  • Welcome new international students to the centre, show them around, help them settle in
  • Help international students in class
  • Participate in a wide range of sports and activities
  • Share a bedroom or sleep in a single room on the same corridor as other students
  • Go on two excursions each week; sharing British culture and local know-how
  • Attend regular meetings with the Student Host Team Leader and respond to their feedback
  • Wear a Discovery Summer blue T-shirt everyday to be easily recognised

APPLICATION CRITERIA

  • British and/or living in the UK for the last 3 years
  • With a native level of English
  • Aged between 11 and 17 years
  • Available for 2 consecutive weeks between 2 July - 9 August 2025
  • Friendly - this is an intensely social role
  • Self-assured and comfortable spending time away Responsible
  • Student Hosts always lead by example.
Is this an academic scholarship?

No! We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly young people who are able to adapt to new situations quickly.

What skills/experience do I need?

We love welcoming talented sports people, artists and musicians to our summer programmes, but you don't need to have a skill in one area to make a great English Student Host.

What makes a great student host?

The best Student Hosts, invited back year after year, are confident, independent and responsible. They genuinely enjoy being busy.

What previous experience should I have?

Ideally, Student Host applicants are independent and have had some leadership experience (e.g. school team, prefect, drama, volunteering) at school.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

Student Hosts
  • A two week 100% scholarship (no hidden costs)
  • Experience life as a boarder at a top independent school; all accommodation, meals, activities and excursions provided
  • A full programme of sports, team challenges and creative activities
  • 2 excursions per week (no additional cost) e.g. Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Oxford, Bath
  • Countless opportunities for making new international friends


WHAT WILL YOU GAIN?

  • Write a personal statement - great practice for future college/university applications
  • Develop interview skills. The application process includes a Zoom interview
  • Build leadership skills as you guide and support international students
  • Improve your social skills as you meet new people
  • Boost resilience as you realise what you have achieved
  • Gain new skills - maybe in an unexpected area - in classes, activities, sports, or in ways of helping people
  • Counts as a residential placement for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award or to support an application for a part time job/gap year project/University application
