An intensive programme for those who are passionate about sports or fascinated by technology - all taught in English

Shrewsbury CEF Levels

English Levels: beginner* to advanced (CEF A1 - C1)

*Under 14 years only

4 July - 1 August 2018 (2, 3 or 4 weeks)


Shrewsbury is renowned as a traditional independent school. It was founded in 1552 and has Charles Darwin amongst its famous 'old boys'. It is situated across the River Severn from the thriving market town of Shrewsbury. Manchester and Birmingham airports are approximately 1.5 hours by road; London Heathrow approximately 3-4 hours.

It has an exceedingly fine campus with both traditional and state-of-the-art buildings. The facilities for study and recreation are top-rate and include large IT suites, a theatre, assembly hall, and DVD 'cinema'. The School's extensive sporting facilities include football pitches, astroturf, tennis and squash courts, indoor sports hall and a new 25m 6-lane indoor swimming pool.

We offer a truly multi-national programme. and a chance to meet English children.


  • 15 hours' intensive sports coaching, dance or tech classes on 5 mornings a week. Each week you choose one of the following options: Tech, Dance, Tennis, Golf, Horse-riding, Adventure Sports. Click here for more information on sports options
  • 15 hours' English lessons (English Skills and English Workshops) per week. These take place in the afternoons. For more information see How we teach English
  • Maximum class size: 12* international students
  • The Trinity Exam in Spoken English is offered (on 17th July and 31st July). It is optional, but highly recommended
  • Challenging activities related to team-building and leadership skills. These are designed to develop confidence, decision making and communication skills.
  • Varied afternoon and evening activity programme 7 days a week.
  • Student Hosts
  • 1 full-day and 1 half-day excursion per week e.g. Birmingham (Cadbury World, museums), Liverpool (Cathedral, Tate Modern, Beatles museum), Theme Park, Warwick Castle, Chester Zoo
  • PLUS: Lots of opportunities to practise English with our English Student Hosts.

*In exceptional cases, in order to place students at the correct level, maximum class size may be exceeded.

Tech Academy : Coding with Raspberry Pi : £150/week NEW for 2018!

Raspberry Pi

Coding with Raspberry Pi – on site (£150/week).

Raspberry Pi enables you to explore coding in a fun and practical way. On our Tech Academy you develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills whilst learning important new programming skills e.g. programming language, creating algorithms, testing programmes for mistakes.

No prior knowledge of coding is required. However, if you are already familiar with Raspberry Pi you will have the chance to further your skills with help from our specialist staff. Projects may include:

  • Build and programme a robotic arm
  • Build a Raspberry Pi 'Supercomputer' to create a virtual business
  • Use Redstone circuits to build a more complex virtual world in Minecraft
  • Build BrickPi robots and programme them to follow specific paths.

Most students work in pairs maximising opportunities for collaboration, analytical thinking and problem-solving.

Dance : £120/week

Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing

All levels – on site (£120/week).

This exciting course, led by fully trained dance professionals includes musical theatre, latin, ballet, salsa, hip hop, jazz and contemporary routines. Different genres are introduced each day, leading to a costumed performance at the end of each week.

Tennis : £120/week


All levels – on site; hard courts. (£120/week).

Our coaches work with small groups at different levels on all aspects of the game - tactical, technical (with the opportunity for video analysis), physical and mental. Tournament day at the end of each week.

Golf : £210/week


All levels (Advanced level coaching available on request) – off site (£210/week).

Run at Shropshire's finest golf course by a highly experienced professional. You will be coached in all aspects of the game on the covered driving range, the pitching/putting greens and on the 3, 9 and 18- hole golf courses. Whether beginner or experienced player, you will benefit greatly from expert tuition.

Horse Riding : £250/week


All levels – off site (£250/week).

The excellent Equestrian Centre offers a challenging programme to riders of all abilities. All aspects of horse management are covered. Manege work is designed to help you gain confidence in handling your horse in a variety of situations e.g. hacking, jumping, dressage and cross-country.

Adventure Sports : £225/week


All levels – on and off site (£225/week).

Activities include quad-biking, mountain boarding, Segway riding, abseiling and high ropes, canoeing, archery and clay pigeon shooting, rifle shooting, zip wire and rock climbing. Once a week we offer e.g. team-building challenges, tag rugby, hockey. Each morning you try different activities.
